When was svp founded

Frederic Ozanam and his friends founded SVP to put their Christian faith into action by reaching out to those that society over looked.

Their vision was to affirm the dignity of every person and ensure that those in greatest need were cared for, their conditions improved and the causes of poverty addressed. They chose St Vincent because he dedicated himself to God through caring for those who were suffering from the effects of poverty and hardship. He believed that to serve those in need was to serve Jesus. Members of the Society come from all walks of life, giving or their time, their talents and themselves to serve people in need and work for social justice.

The Society was founded in by a group of students in Paris. They were challenged to serve the poor of the city and inspired by the example of St Vincent de Paul, they served the local population face to face, as part of their spiritual formation. In a group of men came together in London and started the first group in Britain.

In , two events changed his life. Many other Vincentian organisations followed. St Vincent died in and was canonised in Its members were committed Catholics who found themselves defending the Church against accusations of always backing the rich and powerful.

Wanting to start a Conference in England, Frederic advised him to write articles for magazines. Conferences continued to spring up all over England and Wales. Poverty exists in many various forms and our faith requires us to act, step up to the mark, and do something about it.

Members live a life of charity which does not stop when they leave a parish or university. They take the Society with them - joining parish conferences, or where none exist, starting them. Members meet locally for communal prayer and celebration of specific Feast Days through 'festival masses', as well as nationally and even at times internationally. You are invited to be part of this lay apostolate, taking seriously Christ's command to love God and love your neighbour Mt The rich young man in the Gospel asked Christ what he must do to inherit eternal life and the answer is the same for us as it was for him as Jesus says come and follow me Mt Skip to main content.
