The player's Defense and Resilience are both attributes that reduce the chance of an enemy critically striking. A mob has a weapon skill that is calculated by 5 x Level, and a player has a base defense that is 5 x Level. A player does not have any base resilience. For every level beyond the player, there is an additional 0.
A player in the role of a tank for a raid boss must lower his or her chance of being critically struck by 5. This is where gear bonuses that augment resilience and defense are important. Each point of defense beyond the player's base reduces the chance to be critically struck by 0.
Therefore, to become immune to critical hits dealt from a mob 3 levels higher, a player must have 5. Because a single critical hit from a raid boss can easily remove most, if not all, of its target's HP, becoming crit immune is far more important for tanks than anything else until they are immune; even HP granted from high amounts of Stamina is not enough to mitigate a critical hit.
However, resilience may also be used to lower the chance of being critically struck. There is no base resilience for players. Therefore a level 80 player with no additional defense points, will simply need 5. Note that given a choice between PvP gear and actual tanking gear, the latter is far better because it provides additional use for tanks such as dodge and parry rating.
And gear that provides 2. And gear that provides 4. See below for the formula used to derive defense skill from defense rating. This script will show you how much defense rating you need at level 80 to be uncritable in Heroics and Raids. It collects your character's defense and resilience, then returns how many solid points of defense rating are needed to become uncritable. A need of 4.
Death Knights with Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle copy this:. To determine whether you have reached the crit cap through Defense and Resilience, type the following into chat:. On the flip side, this mechanic can be bad for tanks because bosses also get Parry Haste, meaning they can hit you for massive amounts back to back. Read about Expertise in the guide to Offensive stats to learn how to avoid Parry Haste on bosses.
Block, naturally, only works with classes that use shields. This makes it primarily the concern of Tanking Paladins and Warriors. Block rating was once a very valuable stat for these tanking classes, but since the effective removal of Crushing Blows in Wrath it is far less desirable. Block chance is derived from Block Rating and Defense. The amount of damage mitigated by a blocked attack is based on the players Block Value.
Block Value is derived from Strength for Warriors and Paladins, and is found on armor and shields. To some extent, Block Value also helps with threat generation. These abilities are often used to generate a large amount of threat quickly, but are less effective if the player has low Block Value.
Armor is the system by which WoW determines how much of a melee attack will be mitigated. Armor tends to be passively found on armor items, like head, shoulders, legs, etc. There are some rings, necks, etc.
If you hover over your Armor value on your character pane you will see the percentage of physical damage mitigated by your current Armor. Resilience is considered to be a PvP only stat, and was added in The Burning Crusade to balance out the damage done in Arenas. Apparently the scaling of how much damage players can do versus how much damage they can take has not been equal throughout the lifetime of the game.
Resilience has also been reworked a few times. Post Reply. This site makes extensive use of JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript in your browser. Live PTR. Classic TBC. But your 1 priority is to cap def.
This is something that was tough for me to understand when I first hit 80, because I wanted to tank and my HP pool looked so low, and it was so frustrating to spend all my gem slots on def gems….
If you tank without being def capped, the boss can crit you and your healer will have a heart attack and you will probably die and everyone will wipe. Yeah, I was guilty of doing this. I tanked some heroics before I was capped, and I never wiped any runs due to being crittable.
No way!
