The song is widely recognised as a cultural phenomenon, seeing a viral wave of parodies, lip dubs, and covers after its release, from the likes of the Cookie Monster, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Big Time Rush, amongst others. Call Me Maybe, originally a folk song, was written with Tavish Crowe during development of Jepsen's then-second studio album, Curiosity , between and Jepsen has provided two different accounts of the writing process for the song:.

In May , Jepsen explained how Call Me Maybe was written over the course of a month, with the bridge being the first part conceived - originally a folk song, with a different melody, she had worked on with Tavish Crowe at her uncle's house. The chorus of the song was also written with Tavish Crowe, initially serving as the pre-chorus of another unknown song.

This portion of the song appears to have been performed live by Jepsen alongside Call Me Maybe, serving as the intro to the song, during its live debut on November 14th Both elements of the song that were written with Crowe - the bridge and chorus, were shown to Josh Ramsay sometime later.

Jepsen mentioned that she was introduced to Josh Ramsay by her head of label, around release of Bucket as a single in April , and had show him the original idea for the song after meeting.

On the night before she was due to record the song, Jepsen states she had entirely rewritten one of the verses, as she disliked the way it had been written previously. In June , Jepsen told a slightly different story in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. In this version of events, Jepsen states Call Me Maybe started as a folk song written on the road with Tavish Crowe, and described how the lyrics came in 'very easily'.

The folk demo was then brought to Ramsay, who helped to 'pop-ify' it, Jepsen elaborated. At the time, Jepsen claimed the song was written, recorded and produced 'within four or five days, tops' and described it as a 'pretty easy song to write. Call Me Maybe was first previewed by Jepsen and Records on August 23rd , with a release to follow sometime in early September.

On September 15th, an official release date of September 20th was announced by Records. On that day, Call Me Maybe was released exclusively to iTunes Canada as a digital download, serving as the lead single for Jepsen's then-upcoming second studio album.

In early , upon the success of the Call Me Maybe, Jepsen was signed to School Boy and Interscope Records, who would begin to distribute the song globally - now serving as the lead single for her next album, Kiss , instead. Whilst its exact release date is unclear, Call Me Maybe would begin to impact iTunes in the United States as early as February 20th , with the official release date being noted as February 22nd on Jepsen's website at the time.

Other sources suggest the song was released across Europe on February 20th, and in Brazil and Germany on February 24th. Call Me Maybe would receive an official music video, directed by Ben Knechtel, in late The music video was first announced by Jepsen over social media in response to a fan question on September 29th All rights reserved.

Billboard is celebrating the s with essays on the songs that we feel most define the decade that was -- the songs that both shaped and reflected the music and culture of the period -- with help telling their stories from some of the artists, behind-the-scenes collaborators, label folks and industry insiders involved.

A cosign from a major artist has always been a surefire way to get an up-and-comer some much-needed attention. Jepsen took the songs to a studio session with producer Josh Ramsay, frontman and co-founder of the band Marianas Trench.

It was part of the pre-chorus to a totally different song. And we took that line and then the two of us wrote a new song.

The finished product sounded like nothing Jepsen had ever done before. Gone were the acoustic guitars and barely-there percussion, replaced by electric strings and a whomping beat. Submit Story.
